We the people… In the beginning we the people of the United States, to create a more perfect union, declared independence from an “out of touch” British monarchy. A great nation was born. Americans pledge allegiance to the United States of America…one nation under God. We proudly sing the national anthem before baseball games, our national pastime. The statue of Liberty marks our greatest harbor. The bill of rights guards our people. Our young adults protect our shores.
Now, unemployment soars, housing sales plummet, oil leaks, terrorism looms and natural disasters strike. Events of recent years pose a new challenge. We have overcome great challenges before…but many are tired, discouraged and broke. Whatever your race, whatever your political leaning, we all have seen a mighty nation lose its luster. Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan… Exxon Valdez, B.P. , Katrina…., Watergate, Impeachments, Social Security, Graft… AIG, Enron, Tyco… the list goes on. Politicians and corporate leaders and even sports icons, have failed us. We are scared, sick, tired and mistrustful.
Are we The United States of America, land of the free? Or, the united states of corporation? We must now stand tall and reclaim our country from greed and those who feed it. But, first we need to look inside ourselves. How can each of us be better humans, better citizens? Once we are honest with ourselves, see our true character, the answer will emerge. It lies within hearts and souls. Perhaps if we each look there, honestly look there…we the people will find our way again. – Richard Rizk August 25, 2010
