Injuries Caused by Skiing Accidents
Skiing can cause a variety of serious or potentially life-threatening injuries. Sometimes this is simply because you have skis strapped to your feet, so if you fall the skis could get stuck in the snow and cause you to get thrown around differently than you would if you did not have skis under your feet.
There are other times where you are unable to slow down or avoid fixed objects, like trees, signs or other skiers. There are other accidents that result from the negligence of other skiers, who are going too fast, trying to ski beyond their ability, or cut you off and impair your visibility in front of you.
These and other common skiing accidents can cause injuries such as:
- Broken bones
- Sprains
- Strains
- Dislocations
- Knee injuries
- Lower leg injuries
- Internal injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Severe bruising
- Lacerations
- Internal bleeding
- Soft tissue damage
Treating these injuries could be extremely expensive. You may need months of treatment to fully recover. However, sometimes a full recovery is not possible, and you will need lifelong treatment, particularly if you have a spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury. Even a broken bone could affect you for years, depending on how bad the break is.
Some of the expenses could come from:
- Prescription medications
- Surgeries
- Emergency room treatment
- MRIs
- Physical rehabilitation
- Doctor appointments
- In-home care
- Cost of hiring help for daily activities
- Psychological counseling to deal with side effects from a brain injury

Sometimes these accidents are the result of the skier trying to do something that is beyond his or her ability or just being reckless. However, there are also times when these accidents are the result of defective equipment, another skier’s negligence, poor instructions from a ski instructor, lack of signage warning skiers away from dangerous areas, or even improper maintenance of an area where skiers are allowed to go.

State Laws on Skiing Accidents
Washington has several statutes governing skiing, including requirements for skiers and ski area operators.
Sign Requirements
Under Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 79A.45.010, any signs intended to instruct the public must have bold design with wording that is short, simple and to the point. These signs also must be prominently placed.
Any signs for normal daytime operation must be in place and any related to the tramway, lift, or tow operations must have adequate lighting for skiing that takes place at night.
Conduct of Skiers
In general, anyone who is skiing must conduct himself or herself according to the limits of their abilities and not act in a way that could contribute to injury to yourself or others. Washington law prohibits various types of conduct, including:
- Taking part in any conduct that may injure someone or put an object in an uphill ski track that could cause someone else to fall
- Getting on a lift without authority; these people will be considered trespassers
- Failing to exercise reasonable care for your own safety
- Crossing the uphill track of a j-bar, t-bar, rope or tow
- Failing to maintain control of your speed at all times
Insurance for Ski Operators
The operators of ski resorts are required to maintain insurance for liability. This would cover injuries to skiers.
Under state law, operators of the following must maintain at least one million dollars in coverage:
- Aerial lift
- Surface lift
- Similar devices to the two above
However, this requirement does not apply to tramways that are not open to the general public and operated without a fee.
The Vancouver ski accident attorneys at Rizk Law have in-depth knowledge of these and other skiing accident laws and how they may apply to your case. If we can prove the at-fault party violated one of these statutes, it may be easier to hold them accountable for the injuries you suffered. This will be a crucial part of our investigation into your case to determine fault.
