For the most part, 2014 has been wonderfully sunny here in Oregon. But there is a dark side to sunny Oregon summer days—more motorcycle deaths.

Already this year over 20 Oregonians have died on Oregon roadways in motorcycle involved collisions. At the current rate, Oregon is on pace to double 2013’s motorcycle fatalities. Since 1989, for the most part, Oregon’s motorcycle annual fatalities has hovered around 13. 1985 through 1987 was the deadliest period for Oregon motorcyclists. Over 70 motorcyclists died each year during that period.

Oregon’s most recent motorcycle fatality occurred July 19, 2014 after a 31- year old Lakeview lost control of his bike while passing a truck near Gold Hill, Oregon. His bike is shown here in a field after the fatal collision.
