Fatal Accidents on SE Powell Road
One of the latest accidents on SE Powell Boulevard happened just three weeks ago and resulted in the death of a 73-year-old driver from Happy Valley. The driver was operating his black Chevrolet Silverado SS Extended Cab pickup truck on January 8, 2021 when it slammed into multiple poles along the road. After smashing through a TriMet bus kiosk and a chain-link fence, the vehicle flipped over and came to rest upside down.
The rollover crash involved only a single vehicle, but investigators believe a medical incident may have contributed to the accident.
When Portland Fire & Rescue paramedics arrived on the scene, they attempted to administer lifesaving treatment, but the driver was unresponsive and succumbed to his injuries. All lanes of traffic remained closed for several hours while police investigated the accident scene.
Head-on Collision
Another fatal accident on SE Powell Boulevard – in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood – happened just two days later. A black Toyota Corolla CE sedan was travelling eastbound when it suddenly crossed over the center lane and into the path of oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, three other vehicles were traveling westbound at the same time, including an 18-wheel semi-truck, a Subaru Legacy and another utility truck. The Toyota slammed into oncoming traffic so hard that it spun the vehicle completely around, causing significant damage to the front end of the car. Emergency first responders at the scene informed police that the driver of the Toyota was unresponsive when they arrived and taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
First Steps After an Accident
If you are involved in a traffic accident, there are some things that you should do immediately afterward. Although you may feel disoriented, it is important to try to stay calm.
Other important steps after calling 9-1-1 for help include:
- If you are physically able – move your car off the main road.
- Check yourself and others for injuries.
- When first responders get to the scene answer their questions calmly and clearly, but do not ramble on as it will delay getting help to the scene.
- Do not admit fault when asked for details about the accident.
- Avoid commenting on whether you are hurt; let the doctors diagnose you after a medical examination.
- Do not make any deals with the other driver about paying for your injuries, even if you did not cause the accident, this can make you look guilty.
- Seek medical care immediately after the accident.
- Contact a qualified attorney to find out if you may be able to recover compensation for your injuries and other losses.
